NEXT MEETING

We don't meet in December, but we look forward to seeing you in January for our annual "Meet the Judges" presentation. Details to follow in next month's newsletter.

INTERESTED IN JOINING THE YCBA BOARD?

We'll have an opening in 2006 for a new board member, and if you are interested, please contact any current board member (Jim Nolan, Lisa Lance, Courtenay McKeon, or Dan Maguire).

By custom, the YCBA board operates on a "ladder" system, where new members first serve as Secretary/Program Chair, and then become Treasurer the next year, then Vice-President, and finally President.

So interested members would likely start as Secretary/Program Chair. Please consider joining the board -it does not take too much time, and it's your chance to help shape our programs.

YOUR CHANCE TO JUDGE ROBESPIERRE!

Da Vinci High School in Davis is looking for judges and jurors for a mock trial this Friday, December 9, 2005. Here's the information we've received from teacher Jill Rice:

I teach a World Studies class in which 100 sophomores at Da Vinci High School in Davis are participating in 4 trials where Simon Bolivar, Oliver Cromwell, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Maximillian Robespierre and being tried (separately of course) for treason and murder.

We are hoping to find lawyer and other law professionals to serve as the judge and as members of the jury for these trials. The trials will take place on Friday, December 9. There will be three sessions: 8am-10am, 10:30 -12:30, and 1 - 3:00. If you, or any of your colleagues would be interested in helping us out we would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you had anyway to get the word out to other Yolo County lawyers I could use the suggestions.

Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Jill Rice

CONDUCTING COMPLEX MEETINGS COURSE OFFERED BY COMMON GROUND: CENTER FOR COOPERATIVE SOLUTIONS

As part of University of California, Davis Extension, Common Ground helps government entities, agencies and private- and public-sector organizations come together to find unique solutions to challenging and complex issues.

This winter Common Ground will be offering two, one-day courses in Managing Complex Meetings for public- and private-sector professionals who wish to build their capacity for collaboration and conflict resolution. Controversial issues, public settings and large groups of people can quickly turn a simple meeting into a complex and challenging situation.

These courses will provide a broad repertoire of tools for organizing and running potentially-troublesome meetings. In the first session, participants will gain the skills to engage stakeholders in the design of meeting agendas and to match the format of meetings to its goals.

The second session will look at productive intervention and how to productively engage diverse and sometimes difficult stakeholders. Mediator Susan Carpenter will be conducting both sessions. Carpenter has spent the past 25 years developing and managing programs to reach consensus on public issues, resolve public controversies and develop common goals and visions. For the convenience of program participants, these courses are offered at the Sutter Square Galleria, 2901 K St., midtown Sacramento.

Managing Complex Meetings: The Fundamentals, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 9 am - 4pm.
Managing Complex Meetings: Taking on the Challenges, Wednesday, March 1, 9 am - 4 pm.
